Checklist
Ecommerce SEO audit checklist
This is the checklist a technical SEO would work through on an online store, ordered so the checks that affect the most URLs come first. It applies to any ecommerce platform, with the Shopify-specific traps called out.

Scan my store freeStage 1 — crawl and index
- robots.txt does not block product, collection or image paths.
- XML sitemap loads, every child returns 200, and it lists only canonical URLs.
- The store is not still password-protected or set to noindex from a staging phase.
- Faceted, filtered and sorted URLs are not eating crawl budget.
- Canonical tags are self-referencing on primary URLs and point to the primary URL elsewhere.
Stage 2 — meta data across the catalog
- Every product, collection, page and blog article has a unique title tag of roughly 45–60 characters.
- Every one has a unique meta description of roughly 120–155 characters.
- No duplicate titles caused by variants or supplier feed imports.
- Brand name placement is consistent and does not crowd out the product term.
Stage 3 — product and collection page quality
- Exactly one H1, matching the page subject.
- Product copy is written for the store, not pasted from the supplier feed.
- Collections have an intro paragraph explaining what the collection is.
- Specifications, sizing and shipping information are on the page, not only in a tab loaded by JavaScript.
Stage 4 — images, schema, links, speed
StoreFix runs this entire checklist against a Shopify store for free, then repairs the meta data, alt text, link and structured-data findings inside Shopify and re-audits to verify.
- Every product image has descriptive alt text.
- Images are served in WebP/AVIF at display size.
- Product JSON-LD includes name, image, price, priceCurrency, availability and SKU.
- Breadcrumb and Organization markup are present and valid.
- No broken internal links, no redirect chains, no orphan collections.
- LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200ms on a real product page.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does an ecommerce SEO audit take?
- An automated crawl takes minutes. Reviewing the findings and deciding the corrections for a few hundred products is typically a day of work by hand — or one run with a tool that writes the fixes for you.
- What is the single highest-impact item on the list?
- Unique title tags and meta descriptions across the catalog. They affect the largest number of URLs and directly change what searchers see and click.
