Shopify image alt text: accessibility and image search
Alt text is read aloud by screen readers and used by image search to understand what a picture shows. On a product-heavy Shopify store it is also the fastest large win available, because most catalogs have hundreds of images with no alt attribute at all.

Scan my store freeHow to write it
- 6–14 words describing what is visible, not what you want to rank for.
- Do not start with 'image of' or 'photo of' — the screen reader already says that.
- Include the product name where it genuinely identifies the subject.
- Decorative images should carry an empty alt attribute, not a keyword.
- Never stuff a list of search terms into the attribute.
Missing versus empty
An absent alt attribute and an empty one mean different things. Absent means the image is unlabelled and assistive technology may read the filename aloud. Empty means the image is decorative and should be skipped. Audit tools distinguish the two, and so should your fix.
Weight matters too
The same audit that finds missing alt text usually finds 3 MB hero images served into a 900-pixel container. Serving images at display size and lazy-loading below-the-fold media typically does more for Core Web Vitals than any theme tweak.
StoreFix detects this class of issue during the audit, applies the safe repair through the Shopify Admin API, stores the previous value so you can undo it, and re-runs the audit to confirm the fix landed.
Frequently asked questions
- Does alt text improve rankings?
- It is a direct ranking input for image search and an accessibility requirement. For web search it contributes context rather than acting as a lever on its own.
Find these problems in your store. Fix them in one click.
StoreFix scans your Shopify store, repairs everything it can safely change, and runs the audit again to verify the result.
