Shopify duplicate content: causes and correct fixes
Shopify's URL architecture generates several addresses for the same product and encourages identical product copy across stores. Neither is a penalty, but both dilute how your pages are crawled and ranked. Here is what actually causes it and the correct fix for each cause.

Every product reachable through a collection also exists at /collections/handle/products/handle. Shopify sets the canonical to the clean /products/handle form by default. The problem appears when a theme or an app overwrites the canonical tag, or when your internal links and sitemap point at the collection-prefixed version. Check the rendered canonical on a product page reached through a collection, and make sure it points at /products/handle.
Cause 2 — filter, tag and sort URLs
Faceted navigation creates a near-infinite set of URLs that all show subsets of the same products. These should be crawlable for users but not indexed as separate pages. Confirm they carry a canonical to the parent collection and are not listed in your sitemap.
Cause 3 — variant URLs
Links to ?variant=1234 are the same page with a different option pre-selected. They should canonicalise to the base product URL. Some themes and review apps generate indexable variant links — check your crawl report for them.
Cause 4 — supplier product descriptions
If you dropship or import a supplier feed, hundreds of other stores publish the exact same product text. No canonical fixes this: search engines choose one version and it is rarely the newest store. Rewrite the first paragraph and specifications for your highest-value products first — you do not need to rewrite the entire catalog to see a difference.
StoreFix detects duplicate and near-duplicate titles, descriptions and product copy during the audit, rewrites the meta layer automatically, and flags the body copy that needs a human.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Shopify duplicate content cause a Google penalty?
- No. There is no duplicate content penalty. What happens instead is that search engines pick one version to rank and ignore the rest, which can be the wrong version.
- Should I noindex collection pages?
- No. Collection pages are valuable landing pages. Noindex only the filtered, sorted and tag-parameter variants of them.
- How much product copy do I need to rewrite?
- Start with the 20 products that already get impressions in Search Console. Rewriting those usually moves more than editing the whole catalog at random.
