Meta data

Shopify meta descriptions: length, duplicates and templates

The meta description does not rank your page — it decides whether the ranking turns into a visit. On Shopify it is the single field most often left empty, because the admin buries it behind an 'Edit website SEO' link at the bottom of every product.

What good looks like

  • Roughly 120–155 characters so it is not truncated on desktop or mobile.
  • Unique per URL — never the same sentence across a collection of variants.
  • Contains the term the page is actually about, phrased naturally.
  • States a concrete reason to click: what the product is, and what makes it worth opening.
  • No keyword lists, no ALL CAPS, no invented claims about shipping or guarantees.

The duplicate problem

Supplier feeds and variant-heavy catalogs produce dozens of near-identical descriptions. Crawlers report them as duplicate meta data and Google often ignores them entirely, generating its own snippet from the page. The fix is to differentiate on the attribute that actually distinguishes the products — size, material, colour, use case — rather than rewording the same sentence.

Generating at scale, safely

At a few hundred products, hand-writing is not realistic. Generation is safe when it is constrained to facts already present in the product record and when every generated value is stored alongside the original so it can be reverted.

StoreFix detects this class of issue during the audit, applies the safe repair through the Shopify Admin API, stores the previous value so you can undo it, and re-runs the audit to confirm the fix landed.

Frequently asked questions

What length should a Shopify meta description be?
Aim for 120–155 characters. Longer text is truncated; much shorter text wastes the space you were given.
Does Google always use my meta description?
No. Google rewrites snippets when it judges the description a poor match for the query — which happens far more often with empty or duplicated descriptions.
